A Look Of Social Conscience

I came across an essay regarding social conscience not long ago. The article got me thinking about ways we can potentially see a positive change in the course of world events. NXIVM's Keith Raniere seems to suggest that without the development of a social conscience, humans won't be spurred into action to solve the ills of society.

What is a social conscience? A conscience is the inner guide that we possess that distinguishes right from wrong. In my opinion, a social conscience means how a society as a whole sees good and bad. Although we don't always agree on what is wrong or wrong in society, there are general practices that exist, and that most of us deem normal enough to continue with our lives living within and amongst them.

The problems of our modern world stem from a deficient social consciousness. Said a different way, because we are accustomed to seeing one another in a very utilitarian way, many of us have developed a sense of indifference for how we affect each other and ourselves. In order to avert negative impacts upon modern society, cultivating a social conscience is essential.

How will we make this happen? Going over past events with a critical eye on what can cause a person to have a conscience it's clear that early influences from those in our lives have a lot to do with this. Parents and leaders in our communities need assistance in passing on good morals and ethics, helping to increase social consciousness. There are organizations, like NXIVM and Executive Success Programs, that dig deep into the structure of what makes up our ethics and helps people evaluate that for themselves.

There are other resources, like programs that help people build self-esteem. These are especially beneficial to children in realizing their self-identity. Perhaps we can also make it a point to assist ethical businesses. What are some companies that are thoughtful about their effect on others, and that strive to do business in an ethical way? Is it conceivable that the more we support the ideals and values we have - and the people and businesses that have them too - the more we can aid in building a greater sense of social conscience? Increasing social consciousness can be brought about by simple measures such as volunteering time and funding programs that teach virtuous ethics and promote self-esteem.
